There’s No Canal, But a Good Life In Panama City, Florida!

It’s an odd designation, for sure: Panama City isn’t anywhere close to the country of the same name! Here’s the trivia answer: the city was renamed Panama City in 1914 to capitalize on the completion of the canal, and because it was on a direct line from Chicago to Panama City, Panama—as good a reason as any for naming (or re-naming) a city. But modern Panama City has less to do with transportation (though it does have an important working port), and a lot more to do with fun.

Let’s start with the weather. The climate is nearly ideal, with an average annual temperature of 68.8 degrees. Average summer temperature is 81 degrees and the average winter temperature is 53 degrees.

In addition to the sunny weather, the cost of living is low, there are lots of local amenities, and the city’s education department prides itself on its high graduation rates. All in all, it’s a great place to think about calling home!

Comprising zip codes 32411 and 32402, Panama City is located in what’s known as the Florida “panhandle” on St. Andrews Bay (about 95 miles east of Pensacola and 100 miles southwest of Tallahassee). St. Andrews Bay surrounds much of Panama City, so if you like water, you’re in luck! The bay provides a protected harbor for marinas and for the port itself.

And Panama City real estate is tempting. A few statistics to start with: real estate company Zillow reports that the median home value in Panama City is $106,900.
